Pinewood Derby Car Rules 2009
Cub Scout Pack 64

The Cub Scout is to design and build the car. Parental involvement should be minimal. Scouts are encouraged to be creative with their designs since there will be awards for Best Design and Most Original! Please keep in mind the need to build a durable car, as it will race numerous times.
All cars must pass inspection to qualify for the race. The Pinewood Derby Race Committee will be the official judge for our Pinewood Derby. The committee will have the right to disqualify any car for not passing inspection or adhering to the rules.

ALL RULINGS BY THE COMMITTEE ARE FINAL.

  1. All cars must be made using wood, wheels and axles from the original kits only. If parts are lost or broken, contact your Den Leader for replacements.
  2. Cars using wheels, axles or wood other than in the kit will be disqualified.
  3. The car must have been built during the year in which the Derby is held.
  4. The nail heads must be visible on the wheel. No hubcaps of any kind are allowed.
  5. The simulated tread on the edges of the wheel must be visible.
  6. Cars with modified wheels will be disqualified.
  7. All lettering on the wheels must be visible.
  8. Wheels can be sanded to remove imperfections affecting the roundness only.
  9. The width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches and the minimum distance between wheels is 1¾ inch.
  10. The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches and the height is not to exceed 3 inches from ground level.
  11. The minimum dimension between the top of the track and the bottom of the car is to be 3/8 of an inch.
  12. The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces. Weights cannot be taped on. The car may be hollowed out and the weight inserted and secured to achieve the maximum weight. The idea is not to have any objects falling off the car and onto the track. U.S. Post Offices have scales that can be used to test the car weight. A scale will be available at the trial, however, the official weigh in will be on race day.
  13. The front of the car should be flat on the bottom front edge. Any car that does not rest at the starting gate will be run backwards. Any car not resting at the starting gate backwards will be disqualified.
  14. Wheel bearings, washers and bushings are prohibited.
  15. The car shall not ride on any springs.
  16. Any details added must be within length, height, width and weight limits.
  17. The car must be freewheeling with no starting devices.
  18. No loose material of any kind (such as lead weight) is allowed on the car.
  19. The official number must be clearly visible on the car and will be assigned and put on the car at weigh in.

NO NUMBERS SHOULD BE PUT ON THE CAR OTHER THAN THE ONE ASSIGNED AT WEIGH IN!

  1. There will be no repairs to cars allowed once they have been weighed in and passed inspection.
If the car is unable to race, it will be disqualified.
  2. If a car loses a wheel or wheels, it will be disqualified from the race.
If a scout is unable to be at the Pinewood Derby race, he may bring his car in a suitable container prior to the race or leave it at the trial. The Scout’s name and telephone number should be left with the car inside the container. These cars will be entered into the race in the “as-is” condition.
